The term outsider art was coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English synonym for art brut (French: [aʁ bʁyt], "raw art" or "rough art"), a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture; Dubuffet focused particularly on art by insane-asylum inmates.[1]

While Dubuffet's term is quite specific, the English term "outsider art" is often applied more broadly, to include certain self-taught or Naïve art makers who were never institutionalized. Typically, those labeled as outsider artists have little or no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. In many cases, their work is discovered only after their deaths. Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds.

Outsider art has emerged as a successful art marketing category (an annual Outsider Art Fair has taken place in New York since 1992). The term is sometimes misapplied as a catch-all marketing label for art created by people outside the mainstream "art world," regardless of their circumstances or the content of their work.

Contemporary art is a fraud, says top dealer

The soaring prices - and their subsequent collapse - are proof to some experts that the works had a price, but not much value....

They echo remarks by the British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro, who last week said that “stupid outrageous values” had become more important than the work itself.

..."last week Sir Anthony Caro, 84, one of Britain’s greatest living artists, bemoaned the fact that the market value of paintings had become more meaningful to artists than creating beautiful work. “Some art has got some stupid, outrageous values and it is very sad that money has become a very important part of the art world,” he said at the opening of a new sculpture exhibition in Monterrey, Mexico.

“Because of this crisis, something will change in art and there may be a rethinking of value. In my time, art was never about money. I am not a millionaire. I have tried to make good art.”

Louisa Buck, a columnist for The Art Newspaper, disagreed. “There is no doubt that the likes of Rothko, Picasso and Matisse are magisterial figures,” she said. “But the art world has moved on and to dismiss everything after Bacon is utter nonsense. The contemporary market has been subject to extreme speculation, but there is a difference between speculation and fraud. The economic downturn will moderate the speculative bubble that has seen some less deserving artists command extreme prices.”

Telegraph..."So who are the people who decide which artists become famous and what art we get to see? For the past seven years ArtReview has published a list of the 100 most powerful people in the art world in an effort to make this more transparent.

And sitting on top of the 2008 rankings, released tomorrow, is shark-pickling BritArt superstar Damien Hirst.

As investment bank Lehman Brothers was going under in the middle of last month, Hirst raised £111 million at a groundbreaking (because artists traditionally sell new works though their galleries) auction of his work at Sotheby’s.

Ploughing your money into art, it seems, is safer than putting it in a bank.

All of which is why Hirst has risen above his primary dealers – gallerists Larry Gagosian from America (number 2) and White Cube’s Jay Jopling (6) – as well as Tate director Sir Nicholas Serota (4). He simply doesn’t need them any more.

Hirst is also a good example of how contemporary art reflects modern life. Like our shopping centres, our art world is dominated by superbrands: Hirst in Europe, Jeff Koons in America and the Japanese artist Takashi Murakami (whose recent American retrospective included a Louis Vuitton boutique selling Murakami-designed fashionwear).

Koons and Murakami are in 11th and 28th position on the list respectively, and reflect the increasing dominance of artists equipped with large, factory-like production studios...."Telegraph

"In The Mona Lisa Curse, Hughes traces the pernicious rise of the commercial art market back to 1963, when Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous portrait was exhibited in New York. The Mona Lisa, says Hughes, was treated “as thought it were a film star. People came not to look at it, but to say that they’d seen it.”

This “feeding frenzy” over a single painting marked the start of a process by which works of art became celebrities in their own right. And from the 1960s onwards, as Hughes recounts, acquisitive collectors started buying works of art not because they liked them, but because they expected a financial return.

Hughes’s film argues that art is the biggest unregulated market in the world apart from drugs. Contemporary art sales, such as Hirst’s, rake in £10billion a year. Modern art is dottily expensive to buy not, says Hughes, because it’s so good, but because investors believe it will yield quick profits.

“The commercial art market places too much emphasis upon novelty and trendiness,” he says, “because buyers expect that new work will get more valuable in the short-term.”

Of course, a work of art’s net worth – unlike a company’s – can’t be subjected to objective scrutiny. So those artists, such as Hirst, who attract controversy or have a flair for self-promotion are able to inflate the price of their work with some cleverly orchestrated PR. Moreover, collectors who have already invested in these artists would be fools not to play along, as Hughes explains.

“The market is manipulated by collectors who decide to bid up the work of an artist [they’ve already invested in],” he says. “So when artist X comes up on the auction block, the collectors all bid it up, so that they can then multiply the value of their existing holdings in artist X by the value of the inflated sale.”

The relentless upward surge in prices has two regrettable consequences. First, art becomes seen as a commodity, something to be owned as much as appreciated. Second, the only places ordinary people can experience celebrated works of art at first-hand – museums and public galleries ¬– are now priced out of the auction room.....

....All this makes depressing reading for art lovers. But if on the same day that the world’s financial markets plummeted in panic, Damien Hirst’s art was selling for record sums, shouldn’t everyone be ploughing their savings into artificially preserved farm animals?

“One of the things that sustains the art market is an irrational faith in a continuous rise in prices,” says Hughes. “There was a 17th-century Italian painter called Guido Reni. Not a lot of people have heard of him but in the late 18th century many connoisseurs thought that Italy’s two supreme artists were Michelangelo and Reni. But by 1950 you could buy a 10ft painting by Reni for £300. People fall out of fashion quite rapidly. Paintings in hospitals help patients: give us art for health's sake

..."But what evidence is there that art makes a real difference? In fact, studies apart from last week's Italian one have proved clear clinical benefits. The seminal study in the UK was carried out by Rosalia Staricoff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

It found that the length of stay of patients on a trauma and orthopaedic ward was one day shorter when they experienced visual arts and live music, while their need for pain relief was significantly less than for those in a control group. Visual arts and live music also reduced levels of depression by a third in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

An earlier review by Dr Staricoff identified nearly 400 academic papers showing the beneficial impact of the arts. Singing has been shown to improve quality of life for people with dementia. And rheumatoid arthritis sufferers who listened to 20 minutes of music daily reported a significant reduction in their perception of pain.

These findings confirm the wisdom of experience. There are ample reminders of art placed in hospitals in previous centuries. William Hogarth's 18th-century painting "Pool of Bethesda" still hangs on the grand staircase of Bart's Hospital.

But paintings were often banished from the wards by the post-war trend of brutal minimalism that swept through hospitals and other public buildings. It is only in recent years that hospitals have witnessed a modern renaissance.

The jaw-dropping symbol of this at GOSH peers down from 100 feet in the air, in the atrium of the Octav Botnar Wing. Two months ago, when my family and I walked past the building, Jack and his younger sister Maddy stopped in their tracks, transfixed by the giant multi-coloured inflatable tree, rabbit, caterpillar and bird.

It would be all too easy to dismiss this inflatable art as a lot of hot air. But it instantly transforms the building into a welcoming world. It is just one of a number of art installations in the hospital; and more are planned for the next phase of redevelopment, the Mittal Children's Medical Centre, for which the hospital needs to secure £170 million.

In addition, the hospital is also seeking to study the impact of art on the health outcomes of children. All studies so far, including the Italian one, have been done with adults.

And, lest we forget, Great Ormond Street owes much to art - in the story-telling of JM Barrie.

Artful practitioners of a confidence trick

"Spend enough time in the world of commerce and an ineluctable truth emerges: everyone talks their own book. Stockbrokers push shares, estate agents are bullish about property, entrepreneurs puff their companies and art dealers hype art.

But just as the other asset classes have caved in during the past year, so the value of art must crash. And no part of the art market is more vulnerable than contemporary art, which has risen so very high on little more than PR and salesmanship.

I salute those who have created the merry-go-round: the gallery owners, the critics, the auctioneers, the publicists and even the artists. It has been a wonderful scheme to make lots of money out of almost nothing. But like all asset bubbles it must burst, and I suspect the end is coming awfully soon.

There is a joke theory that art is a remarkable haven, insulated from the hundreds of billions of losses in real estate and on stock markets. Somehow, this “alternative” asset is meant to escape the bloodbath drowning everything from second-hand cars to private equity and remain unscathed. lurking in the waste box in wood shop,
Mr Cutout Gun,
lying in pieces in the scrap box,
blending in.

Grinning with satisfaction or grimacing with pain,
the pain of separation,
the just a little pain of parting....
from the barrel of a gun.

The body lay adjacent to the head
but on another level entirely,
all a sort of empty,
discharged and dischuffed.

The assassin assassinated,
the killer killed,
the Grim Reaper...
reaped.

Of arms and legs there was no sign.
shuffled off, no doubt,
along with humanity, the grace of God
and all chance of redemption.

You can take the gun out of the man but you can’t take the man out of the gun.

Reassembled,
wheels, for mobility, testify to loss,
Half man, half machine,
the cyborg rolls around in pain and disbelief.
